Christmas and Costumes

The costumes have officially been ordered! "Set the Stage for Dance-2013" is going to be a beautiful show with beautiful dancers. The show will be in the afternoon on Sat., May 4 in the old gym. Dress Rehearsal will be in the evening on Wed., May 1. The costumes should be delivered in mid to late February allowing time for exchanges if needed. I look forward to finishing and "cleaning" up dances in January and February as we continue to learn and grow as dancers. I am also toying around with the idea of adding a "just for fun" adult tap class on Thursday evenings at 6:30. There would be no charge. All you need is tap shoes (any style)! If you would be interested, just let me know. Dance provides wonderful therapy and tap provides a good mind and body workout! Thursday dance classes will resume on Jan. 3 and Monday classes will resume on Jan. 7. I hope you all have a joyous and blessed Christmas! May the New Year find you filled with peace and health! Thank you for your continued support of the dance program!

November News

I hope everyone had a spook-tacular Halloween! November is already upon us. The dancers have been working very hard with developing technique and all classes have a great start on recital pieces. Please remember that attendance at dance class is very important. We work hard each week to progress technically and add on to our recital pieces. Just as a sport's team relies on all of its teammates to succeed, the dance "team" relies on each of its teammates to move forward. Thanks for your understanding. November classes start next week. Please send the November dance payment with your dancer if you have not already paid. Also, please remember that costume fees will be due with the December tuition. You can also pay them anytime before. I will order the costumes over the Christmas holiday. This ensures that we have time to make adjustments before the show. There will be no dance classes on the following date: Thursday, Nov. 22 - Thanksgiving Holiday

Dance Program Information 2012-2013
Class Information: Dance instruction will be offered one hour weekly. Students will receive instruction on basic and intermediate technique in the disciplines of Ballet, Jazz, and Tap in a fun setting.  Students will also learn correct terminology.  All classes will begin with stretching and warm-up activities.  Your child’s class will be on either Monday or Thursday.   No guarantee can be made that your child’s class will be scheduled on a preferred day.
Class Size: Spaces are limited and will be given to the first twenty (10 per class) for Pre-K  and Kindergarten classes and first 12-14 for all other classes.  You will be notified via email of class day and time based on availability.
Cost:  The cost for one hour of weekly instruction is $25 a month.  A $25 registration fee will be required with the first month’s payment.  Payment may be made by check or cash and should be placed in an envelope labeled with your child's name. Checks should be made payable to Emily Miller.  A $30 fee for returned checks will be charged.  If a check is returned, payments must then be made in cash.

Payment options:
1.       A $25 flat tuition rate is due the first class of each month (late fee of $5 will be added if paid second week/student will not be admitted to class that month if not paid by third week).  Fees will not be refunded for dancer’s absence.

2.       Pay for the year in full $225 (8 months + registration)/Partial fee (4 months) will be refunded if dancer leaves the program before the Christmas break. After the Christmas break, any fees paid in full will not be refunded upon leaving the program.
Dress Code: Dancers should wear leotards and tights to dance class. This allows for greater movement and allows me to observe their body placement and use of correct technique. No specific color will be required, but please keep it conservative to help avoid distraction in class. Younger students may have skirts attached to leotards, but please no large tutus or costumes.

Older students may also wear dance shorts, Soffee type shorts or yoga pants over leotards. Again, please keep colors conservative. Jeans may not be worn.

Hair should be pulled up in a pony tail and away from the face.

Boys may wear athletic shorts (no mesh) and plain t-shirts for all styles of dance. All boys should wear black tap shoes, black ballet shoes, and black jazz shoes.
See the sidebar for more information regarding shoes.
Performance: Recital date is Saturday, May 4.
Costumes: All students will need to purchase one costume for the recital.  The costume will come with two styles of skirt/and or pants to change looks for dances.  The costume fee is $75 for all students.  This fee is due on/by December 3. Students will be measured for costumes before the Christmas break and costumes will be ordered in early January to ensure delivery by recital time.

Facility/Etiquette: Classes will be held in the parlor. No food or drink will be permitted. Students may keep water bottles in the hallway outside the door and use the water fountain for drink breaks.  Parents/siblings may wait in the hallway, but noise must be kept to a minimum.  Siblings must be supervised at all times and may not run in the hallways.  Students coming from aftercare will be escorted to and from their assigned aftercare room.
Attendance: We will be working on performance pieces while developing technique. Attendance is important, because just like a sports team, dancers work together when performing.
Class Location/Cancellation Policy:  Because we are using the school facility, classes will not be held on days when school is not in session. Classes will also be cancelled if school is cancelled for inclement weather. You will be notified if classes need to be moved or cancelled for any other reason.
Be sure to review all of this information before signing the registration form.
Thank you for your support!
I look forward to a wonderful year of dancing!

March News

I can't believe March is already here! Please be sure to send in March payments with your dancer at her first March class. There will be no classes during Spring Break.

I am getting so excited about the recital on Saturday, May 5 at 2:00 in the old gym. There is much to do to get ready. We are cleaning up the dances and working on straightening lines, pointing toes, and of course those gorgeous smiles.

I was thrilled that all of the costumes fit and they look adorable to boot! It is going to be a beautiful show. Please see the February post on the blog regarding the required tights for each class. It is also time to check shoes for proper fit and color. If you have any questions please feel free to ask.

I am working on getting some practice times scheduled on the stage for us in March and April. I will walk the dancers over and return to the parlor during class.

I still need volunteers to work in the dressing room during the show (two moms from each class). Also, I am still searching for a videographer.

Other dates to remember:

Pictures in Costumes- Wed., April 18 Time TBA

February News

Dear Dance Families,

I hope you all had a wonderful start to the new year. February is almost upon us! The recital is fast approaching and I have a great deal of information to pass along. I have posted this email on the blog, but you might want to print it out for future reference.

• Payment- The February payment of $25 is due at your child’s first February class. There will be no class on Monday, February 20th due to the President’s Day holiday.

• Shoes-Please be sure to label your child’s dance shoes with her name in case they get left behind. It is also a good time to check their fit as the recital approaches. Pre-K, Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd grade students will need pink ballet shoes and white tap shoes for the recital. 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students will need pink ballet shoes, black jazz shoes, and black tap shoes for the recital. Please see the blog for styles.

• Costumes- Costumes are scheduled to arrive in mid February. Students will try the costumes on during dance class to ensure fit and they will be sent home. They need to be stored until picture and recital time. Dancers should not wear their costumes until after the performance.

• Recital Tights- All Pre-K, Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grade students will need white tights for the recital. All 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade dancers will need ballet pink and suntan tights for the recital. It is best to purchase two pair in case of a run.

• Pictures-I have scheduled a class and individual dance picture day for Wednesday, April 18 after school. Mrs. McGinnis will be taking the photos and offering packages which include individual and group shots. I will send more information and a schedule home closer to the date.

• Video- I would love to have a video made of the performance. If anyone knows of someone who is in this field to contact just send me an email.

• Dress Rehearsal/Recital- The last week of classes will be the week of April 23. We will have a dress rehearsal on Wednesday, May 2 beginning at 3:30. The recital is Saturday, May 5th at 2:00. The show should be no longer than 2 hours in length including a brief intermission. Each class will perform three numbers. I would like to have each family bring in a dozen cookies or some other baked good item to share during intermission and/or after the performance.

• Parent Helpers- I will need 2 parents from each class to help the dancers change costume pieces and monitor the dancers in the Girl Scout room during the performance. If you would be willing to help, please send me an email.
